Ebook About NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A beautifully written, extraordinary quest in which two ordinary, overlooked women embark on an unlikely scientific expedition to the South Seas.”—Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand From the bestselling author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry comes an uplifting, irresistible novel about two women on a life-changing adventure, where they must risk everything, break all the rules, and discover their best selves—together. She’s going too far to go it alone. It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist—the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind. Fun-loving Enid Pretty in her tight-fitting pink suit and pom-pom sandals seems to attract trouble wherever she goes. But together these two British women find themselves drawn into a cross-ocean adventure that exceeds all expectations and delivers something neither of them expected to find: the transformative power of friendship. Praise for Miss Benson’s Beetle“A hilarious jaunt into the wilderness of women’s friendship and the triumph of outrageous dreams.”—Kirkus ReviewsBook Miss Benson's Beetle: A Novel Review :
A warm hug, much laughter, and a chance to shed some tears. That’s what reading this book offers. A woman who’s had a rough go of life. From childhood on and one day, while teaching a class, something happens that just breaks her. People are resilient, yes, but they can only take so much.Margery Benson is a middle aged, single, teacher living in London. Teaching a classroom full of ungrateful children and her heart just isn’t in it. One day, just a few years after World War II has ended, she decides to chuck it all and pursue her lifelong dream to find a yet undiscovered golden beetle on the island of New Caledonia, perhaps to bring her back to a moment from her early childhood that holds a precious memory. Of a time when she felt loved. Noticed. By her dear father.Miss Benson will need an assistant to join her on this journey because it is not just any old trip, rather it's a scientific expedition. After settling on hiring a woman who is not her first choice and could be described as her opposite, a relationship develops, which is a surprise to both women. Both with pasts that they are not yet willing to reveal that include heartache and longing for companionship they didn’t know was possible.MISS BENSON’S BEETLE is much more than a trip halfway around the world to locate an elusive beetle. It is a discovery of finding yourself and uncovering the ability to trust. The book depicts the dark side of humanity as well as the tenderness that we are capable of and offers a lesson – that what you think you are looking for is not always what you end up finding. A beautiful, emotional story of friendship and strength that will tug at your heart. 3.5This is a British-ish romp with a heart and intrigue. It’s like “Enchanted April” meets “Thelma and Louise”. It has all the cutesy and dry humor we expect from a mismatched pairing, as well as the deeper dramas of personal awakening and change. Even birth and death. And I must warn you, as a sensitive dog lover, that the dog does die (on page 235). If you don’t like stories where the dog dies (I certainly prefer not to read them), then you may want to skip this one.And the book also has some issues with disjointedness... but it is rich in symbolism, with lots to discuss. Subjects included: identity, damage, man’s world vs nature, ... and fruition.
